A TICKET TO SUSTAINABILITY

Long Island has reached a critical point in its garbage crisis. Brookhaven will close its landfill in 2024, and the 1.1 million tons of waste that it currently accepts per year will need to go somewhere.

A viable solution to this very real waste problem.

The planned Winters Rail Terminal will be located on 228 acres of property in Yaphank. The facility will have rail infrastructure, an indoor solid waste transfer facility and direct access to interstate rail transportation that will allow for goods to be shipped to and from Long Island. This means that waste will be able to be processed and then transported by rail to distant landfills for proper disposal. What’s more, 30 percent of the land has been set aside in a conservation easement for green space. Because of the inherent sustainability of rail, which improves air quality by taking away truck traffic and eliminating congestion, the Winters Rail Terminal will provide the critical and necessary infrastructure to serve Long Island for the next 50-plus years.

Winters Bros. will work with the Town of Brookhaven and the local community to create and execute a plan to build this necessary infrastructure and to facilitate a seamless closure of the landfill. The Winters Rail Terminal project is expected to break ground in 2021 and is projected to take three years to complete.

Project Benefits

Job Creation

The project will create more than 800 construction jobs and 2,000 full-time warehouse distribution jobs.

Land Conservation

65 acres (30%) of the property have been set aside in a conservation easement for the preservation of green space.

Traffic Reduction

The rail facility will eliminate more than 70,000 truck trips per year that would be needed to transport waste after the Brookhaven Landfill closes.

Cleaner Air

A reduction in truck trips will reduce carbon emissions by 86% (emissions per ton-mile) when compared to truck travel.

Safety First

The facility will not handle hazardous waste, radioactive waste, toxic waste or medical waste. It will process recyclables, construction and demolition (C&D) waste and municipal solid waste (MSW).

Quality of Life

Located immediately north of Horseblock Road in Yaphank, the facility is surrounded by other industrial facilities, including a wastewater treatment plant, a landfill, the LIRR main line, a rail terminal and a composting operation. Because the solid waste transfer process will take place entirely indoors, there will not be odors, noise or dust.
